April 2011 - The CIENPI, International Exhibition on Nuclear Energy held in Shenzhen, China, was an opportunity for showing OAKRIDGE voluntary approach to Chinese nuclear majors. Representing over 40% of units under construction worldwide and with a taget of connection to the grid of nearly 150 GW of nuclear power by 2030, China is indeed the most important territory of opportunities for nuclear specialists such as OAKRIDGE. With its references, both for new build projects(EPR reactors) and for operating units (EDF fleet and ESKOM), OAKRIDGE brings unique added-values services to its clients, worldwide.

The French president visited Japan, with the Chair of the Areva group accompanied by several nuclear experts. By their presence, they expressed the solidarity of France to Japan and have provided technical assistance to address the current crisis. Moreover, France has proposed to harmonize global security requirements to be applied to different reactors to build. Finally, on the NPP site, although the situation appears stable with respect to pools and reactors, the contaminated water is now stagnating in various buildings. TEPCO is looking at ways to pump and store the water before further processing.

Devastating earthquake and tsunami occured in Japan

March 11, 2011 - The epicenter of the earthquake that occurred in Japan is 130 km east of the city of Sendai, offshore northeast of the island of Honshu, with exceptional magnitude (9 on the Richter scale). It caused significant damage and generated a particularly devastating tsunami in the region of Sandai. In this region, TEPCO operates two nuclear Power plants : Fukushima Daini (4 BWR reactors of 1100 MW each, started between 1981 and 1986) and Fukushima Daiici, consisting of 6  BWR units. Unit 1, connected to the grid since November 17, 1970, had an output of 460 MW ; units 2 to 5, started between 1973 and 1977, deliver each a power of 784 MW. Unit 6, in operation since May 4 1979, is powering of 1100 MW.

GE Hitachi is the company with the most references in this type of BWR reactors. Generation 3 of BWR available "on the market" today are the reactors ABWR and ESBWR ; AREVA also proposes its concept of boiling water reactor, the Kerena.

Today, approximately 20% of reactors connected in the world are BWR, 7% of those under construction are BWR.

Hungary

April 2010 - OAKRIDGE is involved in the nuclear Franco-Hungarian meetings, in Budapest. This is an opportunity to forge the first links to future partnerships necessary for the new build project desired by the Hungarians. It is indeed one of the four shortlisted candidates, ATMEA1, AP1000, EPR or AES600 that should be built on the site of the existing plant at Paks. This site currently has four VVER units, each with an output of 500 MW.

February 10 - OAKRIDGE was awarded 3-year framework contracts to perform missions at the Institute of Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN). Since its inception in 2002, OAKRIDGE worked on behalf of the IRSN, first in the field of nuclear fuel cycle plant safety, then in the field of nuclear reactor safety, all in the context of assessment of safety reports issued by the operators. Today is a milestone for OAKRIDGE engineers, because this partnership will enhance their operating experience gained in the past years with designers and operators of nuclear facilities.
